Junior Competitions

All games are 4 a-side for Year 1-2 & Year 3-4 (played on the mini fields with mini goals) and 5-a-side for the other junior grades (played on the bigger fields) – see field layout.

The Junior Competition is split into the following age groups:

  • Year 1-2: 4.00pm
  • Year 3-4: 4.30pm
  • Year 5-6: 5.00pm
  • Year 7-8: 5.30pm
  • Year 9-10: 5.30pm

N.B. Where there is an odd number of teams in an age group some teams may have a double game, which is arranged at an earlier time slot. Earliest kick off times will be 3:30pm.

Rules

  1. There is no offside, otherwise normal ‘Laws of the Game’ apply
  2. For Year 1-2 & Year 3-4 the rules will be flexible with the aim to teach the basics of the game
  3. 2x halves of 10 min (2 min half time)
  4. Teams should wear a uniform shirt colour – otherwise they should use bibs
  5. We recommend players to wear shin-guards
  6. Kick-ins (not throw-ins) & corners apply for all age groups
  7. Goal keepers must pass, throw or roll the ball – NO KICKING OUT OF THEIR HANDS
  8. Retreating Line applies: opposition must retreat to allow one team to play out from the back

Southland Football will provide referees for all the games, but if at any stage the referee is late, we ask the coaches to start the games and referee for a few minutes until the referee arrives (hopefully this will never happen but just in case, so the kids do not miss out on game time).
